Chapter Fifteen

After dropping Danika home, George and Greg had remained in their disguises, sitting in an out-of-the-way lay-by to discuss their next move. Knowing that Will, Cameron, and Ichabod had everything in order, and it would be a while before they were needed at the cottage, they’d sat there hashing things out. Once Cameron had messaged to say Amelia had been rescued and Ichabod had gone in to collect The Organiser, George had let Danika know the state of play. He still hadn’t been sure at that point how they were going to deal with her, but Greg had taken the decision out of his hands.

“If you put yourself in her shoes for just a minute and imagine the fear and pressure she was under, is it any wonder she did things the way she did?”

George had sighed. “I get what you’re saying, but there’s a voice in the back of my head telling me I’ve believed people in the past and they’ve turned out to be liars. That voice comes from you—I seem to recall you drummed it into me to not take people at face value.”

“But now you’re taking it to extremes.”

“You must have known I would, I’ve got that sort of personality. Listen, I know deep down she’s kosher, but there’s a part of me that wants to punish her for what she’s allowed to happen because a nipper is involved—her niece, for fuck’s sake. Family.”

“Take it out on The Organiser and whoever this Purple is, if we’re lucky enough to find the one who’s been pulling all the strings.”

They’d discussed taking Amelia home. George was familiar with the street she lived on, and they were the type of neighbours who’d drop everything to help someone in need, so it didn’t make sense as to why the abduction had been kept quiet when so many people knew about it. Danika said the residents had all gone out looking for Amelia. With the age of social media and how every aspect of lives were put on show for everyone to see, how come none of them had mentioned the goings-on in the street that night? Why weren’t there missing kid flyers on lampposts and SM statuses? Had the police told them to keep it quiet? It infuriated him that he hadn’t heard about this. One of their grasses lived on that road, and there hadn’t been a peep. He’d be having a word with them when everything died down.

He’d said as much to Greg who’d given one of his usual tuts and shaken his head.

“Think about it this way,” he’d said. “If the Old Bill told them that keeping quiet about it might mean Amelia would be brought home sooner, any decent person would go down the route of keeping their gob shut, no matter that we wouldn’t be pleased about it. Yes, they know they’ll get a bollocking from us, but isn’t that preferable to opening their mouths and having a hand in Amelia never coming home?
